A Visit From the Goon Squad

Tonight, while drinking a glass of pink champagne and sitting in my bathtub, I finished my second book of the year, A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. This book is another on my books-to-read-in-your-20s list.

I think this book made the books-to-read-in-your-20s list because it is a reality check of sorts – we are all going to get older. It does not always seem like that when you’re in your 20s.

If you’ve been following my blog, you know that I am a sucker for any book that alternates perspectives, and Egan does this incredibly well. Not only does each chapter change perspectives, it also jumps time periods. There is an entire chapter done in Power Point slides. It’s unique, but Egan keeps it balanced – nothing is too far-fetched.

While I liked the structure of this book, I could not connect well with the music scene that the story revolves around. I’m not particularly interested about the inner workings of the music industry. While well-written, some of the plot did not quite hook my interest.

Egan is creative and her style kept me hooked even when I did not have a particular interest in the story. I will pick up another one of Egan’s books in the future because I am curious to see what else she has written.

Have you read anything else by Egan?
